Monoceros (the Unicorn) is a modern constellation formed in 1641 by German scientist Jakob Bartsch out of some faint stars surrounded by Canis Major (big dog), Gemini (the twins), Orion (the hunter), Canis Minor (little dog) and Hydra (sea serpent). It is about 482 square degrees in size. Both the celestial equator (projection of the Earth's equator into the celestial sphere) and the galactic equator (the extension of the plane of the Milky Way on the celestial spehere) pass through this constellation. Though the stars that make Monoceros up are faint, there are several nebulae within its region.
