The popular western dragon is quiet common in books and movies. It was usually seen as having four legs that ended in claws, two wings, a long tail and neck, a head with horns, a serpent like tongue and was covered in armor-like scales. Some even had fur or feathers. Dragons come in all colors. Most were able to expel flame, smoke or other substances from their mouths for the purpose of defense or attack. They were considered to have a long life span and some were seen as wise. Dragons could either be malicious or friendly, though more often than not, throughout the middle ages they were seen as cruel beasts.
The dragon is commonly seen hording gold or other treasures, and there are stories of how miserly men became dragons because of their greed. Dragons supposedly prefered virgin sacrafices when they grew tired of sheep. And brave knights hunted them to save the foresaid virgins, or at least to prove their honor and glory. This has become the 'sterotypical' image of the dragon. Modern western dragons have broke away from this image somewhat, though they tend to retain the same general appearances.
